Deadlines by end of 2010!

For the past few weeks, I haven't been in ease as I realize that this semester has almost come to an end, meaning this is the time I'm in my rambut gerbang mode.....if you're wondering what that means, well, it means that it is the time that I don't have time to manage myself....such as like after I take a shower, I don't even have the time to comb my hair which later I will end up looking like Lion King.....as long as I get my work done...haha! so the next time whenever I say rambut gerbang mode, you'll know what I mean....:P

So for this sem, as I am taking Research Foundation & Dissertation, my submissions are (based on what my coursemates informed me since I was absent last week coz i wasn't feeling well huhu) ;

•  Research proposal
•  not more than 10 pages
• before 6 pm!
• upload via Moodle

Sometime early November * Starting second week of Nov

• Research proposal presentation
• for 20-30 minutes....alone!
• There will be four panels that comprise of the Professor who conducts this subject, another panel who is a Professor expertise in the major we're in/ field of study for our project and the other two are our classmates. * Correction: Only two panels, Prof and another Prof from our research domain
• Need to prepare two hard copies of the Proposal for the panels

Before January 2011

• Submit Progress Report for my dissertation
• My target : at least to do half of Chapter 2....a bit of Chapter 3....yikes, will I achieve it????!!!
• Plus, haven't seen my supervisor for such a long time...do you think she 'misses' me? yikes!

In case, any of you are wondering, this is my outline for the Research Proposal (i doubt how many people actually read this blog but for those who are interested, I feel appreciated, Thank You!...hehehe)

I'm just starting my Literature Review but my report has already reached 7 pages...I will try my best to organize the structure again coz I think I wrote too much for the introduction, Prof did stress out that he wants not more than 10 pages for the proposal....huhuhu.....from what I know, the Objective of Research, Literature Review and Proposed Solution...also the Conclusion are the main highlights that needs to be emphasize and convincing.

SKILLS YOU WILL NEED AS A COMPUTER SCIENCE THESIS STUDENT

While there are no hard and fast rules that guarantee you have the background and skills required to complete a thesis in Computer Science, there are some indicators. Here is a list of some of these indicators.

• A good grade point average. This indicates that you have basic academic skills. It is difficult to specify an exact cut-off, but a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale is a reasonable minimum.
• The ability to write in the English language. Practice writing. Effective communication is essential in all disciplines. If you need help, contact the Language Institute or English Department.
• The ability to express yourself orally. You will be asked to present lectures on your work at the Computer Science seminar.
• Mastery of the computer language in which you will develop your program. You should not look at your thesis work as an opportunity to learn how to program. You should be very familiar with the operating system you will use and system utilities such as editors, document formatters, debuggers, etc.
• The ability to work with others. You must be able to work with your thesis advisor, and you may need to work with other faculty and students as well.
• The ability to take direction. Your thesis advisor will give you guidance, but you must do the work.
• The ability to conduct literature surveys. You must insure that your work is current and relevant even though it may not be original or unique.
• The ability to integrate ideas from various areas. This is key to a thesis. Extracting items of interest from many sources and generating new information by integrating these items in new ways is the essence of writing a thesis.
• The ability to think independently. Your work must be your own. Your advisor will not tell you what to do at every step, but will only suggest a direction. The rest is up to you.
• The ability to perform when imprecise goals are set for you, that is, you must be self-directed.

My Dissertation.....

Hi people,

I am currently preparing my dissertation on the topic of values that is brought by information system from the user's perspective. This title was proposed by my lecturer (who is now my Supervisor) when I took Information System Development & Practice last semester and was part of my assignment for that subject. From what I understood, it is more like a study-based research rather than developing a system. I am still not sure whether I should come out with a system with this title altho some said I do not have to but others says that is is a requirement to complete the dissertation in Computer Science.

I have seek advice from friends who gave me some ideas on what to include in my dissertation such as giving examples of the successful IS, interviewing people, surveying and identifying users' expectation and involvement during the development. I did find it quite hard to deliver this research so that is why I am still reading journals to enhance my understanding. I found a few journals almost related to my study such as the pros and cons of user involvement and there are actually almost similar topics to mine so I just have to keep reading till I understand what I should prepare.

My research foundation lecturer advice us to look for a problem in that particular topic, he said in that way, we are able to elaborate the issue. I did identify problem such as developers hard to work with user's due to that they are participating unwillingly, they don't do their real job when observe by developers and so on. The thing which makes it difficult is starting the dissertation itself. where should I start? what should I write first? how do I Introduce the first part and lead to the next sub topic? etc.......all of those are still lingering in my mind, hence I am still searching on the net for effective and useful sources.
